Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.
(1 Peter 5:1-3)
Leadership is essential. Scripture everywhere places a premium on leadership. The concept is self-explanatory: leadership leads and leading is marking a trail for others to follow. Spiritual leadership is unique in that its standard of qualification never changes. Make no mistake, everyone influences others to a degree. The only question is, are we good leaders?
Scripture designates two offices, Elders and Deacons, to lead the church of Jesus Christ. Broadly speaking, the characteristics of spiritual leadership are an uncompromising stand on God's word, an irreproachable life, and engaging in selfless service. A true leader loves excellence.
